The Porterville College Cultural and Historic Awareness Program (CHAP) is pleased to announce its next event of 2025, a special lecture in honor of Women’s History Month featuring Chaplain (Capt.) Jenna Carson, USAF. Capt. Carson will present “Preaching in Prisons,” a compelling discussion about her experiences creating sacred spaces in high-security environments.

The event will take place on Friday, March 7th, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the PC Theater on the Porterville College campus.

Capt. Jenna Carson, a chaplain in the United States Air Force, brings a unique perspective to the topic. Prior to her military service, she served as a hospital and prison chaplain, gaining invaluable experience in providing spiritual guidance in challenging settings. Notably, Capt. Carson is the first woman to be officially recognized as a chaplain by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Her lecture, “Preaching in Prisons,” will delve into her work as a woman chaplain in an all-male high-security federal prison, exploring the creation of sacred and safe spaces for those incarcerated. Capt. Carson’s diverse background also includes being a Kripalu-certified Yoga Therapist and co-hosting the spiritual self-help podcast, “Guiding Light.” She holds a BA from Brigham Young University and a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School.

This event is FREE and open to the public, and attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Capt. Carson during a Q&A session. Proof of attendance cards will be provided for students seeking academic credit.
