Porterville College is celebrating the participation of three of its students in the recent CMSP SJV-MedBridge orientation at UCSF Fresno. CMSP SJV-MedBridge is a premedical outreach program designed to support community college students aspiring to become physicians.

Joseph Blue, a MESA Scholar, Atalia Martinez, an Academic Support Services Student Worker, and Itzel Ferrer-Huanaco, a former Academic Support Services Student Worker, joined other aspiring medical professionals from the Central Valley for this valuable opportunity. Their involvement highlights the dedication and talent within the PC student body and underscores the college's commitment to supporting students pursuing careers in healthcare.

The orientation, hosted by the CMSP SJV-MedBridge Hub (UCSF Fresno), provided a platform for new CMSP scholars to connect with one another and gain insights into the program. Attendees had the chance to ask questions and learn more about the resources and support available to them as they embark on their medical education journeys.

UCSF Fresno, a regional campus of University of California, San Francisco and the largest physician-training program between San Francisco and Sacramento and Los Angeles, plays a crucial role in addressing physician shortages in the Valley. This partnership with CMSP SJV-MedBridge provides invaluable opportunities for students from the Central Valley to pursue their dreams of becoming doctors.

The participation of PC students in this program is a testament to the support provided by programs like the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program. MESA is dedicated to helping educationally disadvantaged and underrepresented students excel in STEM fields. Through academic support, mentorship, research opportunities, professional development, and strong partnerships, MESA empowers students to succeed academically, transfer to four-year universities, and prepare for fulfilling STEM careers.

Joseph Blue's involvement as a MESA Scholar demonstrates the program's effectiveness in nurturing future healthcare professionals. The success of Atalia and Itzel, along with Joseph, serves as an inspiration to other PC students considering careers in medicine and related fields. Porterville College is incredibly proud of these future doctors from the Central Valley and wishes them the best in their academic endeavors.
