BC Hosts 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration
The Bakersfield College Student Government Association (BCSGA) and A2Mend hosted a special event honoring and celebrating Juneteenth. Students, faculty, staff, and community members were invited to participate in the celebration which included food and fellowship, all while emphasizing the significance of the Juneteenth holiday.
Leo Ayala, Assistant Director of Student Life at BC, helped coordinate the event. “The BCSGA wanted to host an event that brought forward one of our campus’ strongest assets, community,” said Ayala. “Through community and food, we can celebrate a momentous occasion while sharing insights on the history of our past.”
This is the second year that BC has hosted a Juneteenth Freedom Celebration, and the plan is to continue the event annually. “Juneteenth stands as an annual reminder that the struggle for equality is not limited to a single moment in time but is an ongoing journey,” said Ayala, “the goal is to educate and inspire BC students and the BC community to address injustices that persist in our society and to build a future that embodies the true principals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all.”
