BC Hosts Garden Fest 2024
By Deanna Rea
Bakersfield College and the BC Horticulture Department recently hosted the Garden Fest for 2024 on Saturday, April 27. This unique event featured a collaboration between vendors, attendees and BC; bringing diverse communities together to enjoy a mutual interest in agriculture.
Throughout the day, there was a cool breeze that helped to balance the bright, sunny weather. The walkways alongside each vendor were teeming with new people and friendly faces. So much so, that you couldn’t take two steps without meeting someone new. The event also featured several food trucks providing a wide array of refreshments, food, and snow cones.
As far as the eye could see, there were vendors and booths stretched across the lawns of Bakersfield College’s Renegade Park. Each vendor presented a variety of different goods like handmade accessories, crystals, home decor, art, and more. However, the highlight of the event was the variety of plants and vegetation, which were especially eye-catching.
While most were potted plants were perfect for setting around the house, like succulents (of every size), pothos, and dracaena, the BC Agriculture Department was kind enough to offer a selection of sweet basil, bell peppers, strawberries, and cilantro. There were also beautifully colored flowering plants including hydrangeas, hibiscus, bougainvillea, roses, and so much more.
Some of the participating vendors included Zack’s Big Trees and Nursery, General Tree Service, and Ace Hardware. Many Bakersfield College departments and services also participated, including veteran services, the Renegade Campus Store, EOPS, and Rising Scholars.
