Panelists from Unstitching Fast Fashion event

Clothing is more than a fashion statement. Each thread tells a story about how the garment was created, obtained, and eventually sold to you. Join us for our next Porterville College Cultural and Historical Awareness Program (CHAP) event, “Unstitching Fast Fashion: Avoiding cheap clothing that harms workers, consumers, and the environment” on Wednesday March 6th from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the PC Theater as we explore the clothing industry of today in a panel discussion with personal sewist Hannah Rice of Langley Threads in Exeter, Maria Roman of the American Association Of University Women (AAUW), and PC Student Marissa Jones.

Hannah Rice founded Langley Threads in October 2021 as a response to learning about the fashion industry and the conditions in which our clothes are usually made: under poor working conditions, long hours, and low wages. She is passionate about creating clothing with great care and about educating and bringing dignity back to the profession of creating garments.

PC Professor Emerita Maria Roman is currently President of the AAUW, Porterville Branch. Growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s in a large family with three older sisters, hand-me-downs were always expected, and she was taught by her mother and in sewing classes to sew her own clothes.

Marissa Jones is a 2nd-year student at Porterville College, majoring in English. Through her research for a project on Fast Fashion, she discovered how horrendous the fast fashion industry is. This created a desire to create change, spread awareness, and advocate for those affected by the industry. Marissa is passionate about the rights and safety of people in the textile industry and is bringing awareness to her community.

This event is cosponsored by the American Association of University Women and the PC Language Arts Department. CHAP was organized in 2002 to enhance students’ awareness of certain important aspects of our society to which they may previously have had little or no exposure.
