BC Hosts Successful Public Safety Expo
Bakersfield College held a Public Safety Expo on the Panorama campus, allowing students to speak with professionals in different fields and gain insight about possible opportunities in the related career field.
Many vendors were present, including the Bakersfield Police Department, Kern County Probation Department, Kern County Sheriff Department and Swats, the Fire Department, Hall Ambulance, California Highway Patrol, and EMS Agency.
In addition, Bakersfield College had its own financial aid booth with staff eager to speak with students and answer any relevant questions.
Aside from the informational flyers and free gifts at each booth, the event featured an ambulance vehicle where students could look inside and learn about the different purposes of the equipment.
In addition, the Sheriff's Department swat team gained a lot of attention. Many students spoke with the swats and learned about the different equipment used in their daily role.
Interactive events such as these aim to bridge the gap between students and their long-term success. Students enjoy learning about their career path and hearing first-hand experience, and the professionals also like to be out in the community, giving information and guiding students in the right direction.
"Every time the department sends me out, it is a privilege to share information and talk with people in the community. I think students are not always aware of what opportunities exist for them and the different roles they can play along the way," says Cori Castillo from the Tulare County Sheriff's Department.
"My favorite part is talking to students, informing them about what they can do, and seeing their excitement. I also enjoy teaching them what it is like to be in this job," says Abram Caro from the Tulare County Sheriff's Department.
As Bakersfield College continues to host events geared toward student success, all students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.
